Job description:

In the scope of R&D project “Projeto Estratégico LA 9 - UID/EEA/50009/2013” from Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute/ LARSyS, with the funding support from FCT/ MCTES through national funding, it is now open a call for 1 (one) full time vacancy for research and development of a smartwatch and smartphone system to gather human physiological data, in the scope of the project “BWATCH: Studying motivation, engagement and emotional states during binge watching.”

Main research field: Human-Computer Interaction

Work plan:

The work to be developed is the research and coding/development of a smartwatch and smartphone system to gather human physiological data while watching online TV for a long period. The system will be used in an in-the-filed user study, which will be published in a top HCI venue.

Work place: 

The work will be conducted at Madeira­ITI (Funchal, Portugal) under the supervision of Prof. Diogo Cabral (http://www.m-iti.org/people/diogo) and Prof. Mónica Cameirão (http://neurorehabilitation.m­iti.org).

Monthly stipend: 

The monthly maintenance stipend will be between 980€ net (according to experience and academic degree) paid by wire transfer, according to the Portuguese directives from the ministry of science and education www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.

Candidates are required to have a Master academic degree in Computer Science or Engineering; good programming skills in Java; experience on Android development and some experience with web technologies (HTML, CSS, PHP). Experience with physiological computing, while not mandatory, will be a plus. Research related experience is desirable. Fluency in English is mandatory.

Legislation and regulations: The scholarships are directed to applicants under the law n.º40/2004 of August 18th (Research Grant Holder Statute) and the current conditions established on the FCT regulations http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT.pdf.

The curricular selection process will be based on:

· Education Background and graduation (40%)

· Technology related skills relevant for the project execution (30%)

· Experience in related tasks (20%)

· English language skills (10%)

The top four candidates can be selected for a job interview and, in this case, the selection will be based on:

· Curricular Selection (70%)

· Interview (30%)

Recommendation letters are facultative but can contribute positively to the evaluation.
