If you’re not familiar with the graduate admission process for US Universities please check the The Complete Guide to US Graduate Admissions. Below is an abridged guide to the key aspects of this process.
Application Requirements and Process
1. Application Form.
You can either Download and complete the application. You will need Adobe Reader to view and print it. Please note that it is important for you to complete all areas of the application.
2. Official Transcripts.
Submit official transcripts (photocopies are not acceptable) from all undergraduate and graduate institutions that you have attended.
3. A portfolio, GRE scores, or both.
Applicants must submit either a portfolio or GRE scores. You should send us anything that will help us evaluate you as a candidate, and that best represents your talent, abilities and potential. If that is in the form of a portfolio (and know that "portfolio" is loosely defined) or in the form of GRE scores, it doesn't matter and will not affect your standing as an applicant. We encourage you to send us both if you feel comfortable doing so.
If you submit a portfolio, note that it can be made up of examples of graphic arts, traditional artwork, music, writing, or any another creative medium. We are open to non-traditional portfolios types as well, such as a copy of a grant proposal or business plan, if that is what best represents the talent which you think makes you a candidate for the ETC.
If you submit your GRE score, you should request that ETS send an official score report of your GRE to Carnegie Mellon with institution code 2074, department code 0402. Official scores from ETS are required. Photocopies and student score reports will only be accepted for preliminary review of your application, but no application will be considered complete until the official scores have been received. GRE scores more than five-years old will not be accepted.
You can register for the GRE General Test at the ETS registration site. The GRE General Test costs $160 USD. In Portugal the GRE General Test is given at the New University of Lisbon School of Economy - Faculdade de Economia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa - in the Campolide campus; Test Center Number: 8074 and contact phone: +351213801625. For further information GRE test options, please get in touch through email to: met@m-iti.org.
4. Three Letters of Recommendation.
Request three letters of recommendation. If possible, at least one recommendation should be from an instructor and one should be from a professional supervisor. If you have little or no work experience, it is acceptable to provide three academic references. The recommenders you choose should know you relatively well and be able to discuss the quality of your work.
5. A statement of purpose and a resume.
The statement should be concise and contain the following information:
The résumé should be complete up-to-date. Relevant work experiences should be ordered chronologically with the most recent first. Clearly distinguish part-time, co-op, or intern work from full-time positions.
6. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS.
TOEFL or IELTS is required if your native language is not English. However, if you have previously studied in the US, or studied in an English speaking school, TOEFL/IELTS is not required. The minimum score requirements are listed below:
• Paper Based Test (PBT) - Score of 600 required
• Computer Based Test (CBT) - Score of 250 required
• Internet Based Test (IBT) - Score of 82 required
Reading score of 21 required
Listing score of 21 required
Speaking score of 17 required
Writing score of 20 required
• IELTS - Minimum score of 7 required
When submitting TOEFL score, you should request that ETS send an official score report to Carnegie Mellon with institution code 4236, department code 78. Official scores from the ETS are required.
Students who have completed equivalent exams that demonstrate a high degree of English proficiency (e.g. Cambridge’s Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), or Cambridge’s Certificate in Proficiency in English (CPE)) may substitute these test results for the TOEFL. When in doubt, an inquiry can be sent to: met@m-iti.org
